Day 5

Guest blog by Marion Olsen

Hi. I am a long time friend of Michelle and my family and I are very happy to have her staying with us during her time volunteering at the Olympics.
We like to think of it as our volunteer work except we are volunteering to help the volunteer. It’s not as glamorous as actually volunteering and we don’t get a cool jacket to wear!
This is my very first time blogging. I reluctantly agreed to do it because our volunteer guest feels very tired! As I spent the day with Michelle I guess it qualifies me to comment on the day.

I may have worn Michelle out with my confusion and questions at the womens hockey game we took in at the Thunderbird stadium at UBC today. I am not sporty and the only sports I watch are when my daughters are playing and they do not play hockey! Michelle was very gracious but I am sure I was riding her last nerve with my commentary!

USA played against China with the Americans controlling the play and all the action was in front of the Chinese net. USA won 12 -1 . We cheered out of sympathy for the Chinese when they finally scored a goal in the last period.
Actually Michelle made me buy a cowbell so I would say we rang our cowbells every chance we could. Maybe it was the cowbell or my loud questions that drove away the man sitting beside me. He never came back after the first period Ha Ha!
After the game we returned to our car conveniently parked at my friends house at UBC - thanks Barbara for the parking spot! We faced such a beautiful sunny day so we decided we must go down memory lane and return to our favourite spots in Kitslano that we share many happy memories living there. First stop was Kits Beach and Michelle was mildly impressed with the new two storey restaurant and bathroom facilities. The view was beautiful as always.
Next, off to Fourth avenue to Capers, a favourite alternative grocery store, then Terra breads for me and “Singles” Safeway for Michelle. All you ex vancourites will know what I mean.
The weather is very nice so it is no wonder cypress mountain is a slushy mess. We are watching the coverage on tv right now and have learned thousands of general admission tickets to Cypress will be refunded because it`s too slushy to accomodate the spectators. Too bad. Also, the flame behind a chain linked fence is making the news with demands to take it down. Free the Flame.
Congrats to Alexandre the first gold medalist on Canadian soil.
I have to sign off now. I have a feeling I will be blogging again for Michelle another night! Thanks for reading...
Go Canada Go!
